Review:
My thoughts on this haven't changed since I read it the first time, while I think they are mostly a good match I don't love them together. I know there is always a power imbalance because of social rank but it feels like Annabelle needed to heal from the damage her father did and that her cousin was still doing before marrying anyone.
This is a reread caused by a spur of the moment wanting to reexperience a scene between Annabelle and Montgomery when outlining a fic idea
Epiphanies/quotes/ Things to remember:
- “If we were of equal station,” he said softly, “I would have proposed to you when we took our walk in the maze.” - I get what he was going for here but this is just so mean to her. Why do you need to kick her while she's down? Especially given her past interactions with the nobility
-"What a way to find out he did have a heart." - I mean we've been told he was harsh and cold but this just feels like he's too mean to himself. Also everyone apparently needed a therapist in the last few centuries
- "“There are people who always feel responsible.” This right here just cuts a little too close for comfort at times
- "In such matters, the woman always bears the brunt.” And they still do today
